Reading intervention for upper elementary can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to figure out exactly what your struggling readers need while also managing an already packed literacy block.
You know your students need additional support. But what should you teach? Where should you start? How do you fit intervention into your schedule? And how do you provide foundational reading instruction without making your third, fourth, or fifth graders feel like they’re doing “little kid” work?
In this replay episode of The Stellar Teacher Podcast, we’re giving you a behind the scenes look at the Stellar Teacher Reading Intervention Kit, a resource created specifically to help upper elementary teachers provide targeted, effective reading intervention to students who struggle with decoding.
I’m joined by Stellar Teacher team member and curriculum writer Emily, who was the mastermind behind developing this resource. Together, we’re sharing the challenges that inspired the kit, the research behind it, and how we designed it to make reading intervention for upper elementary practical and doable.
Why Reading Intervention for Upper Elementary Can Feel So Challenging
When you’re teaching third, fourth, or fifth grade, you might have students who can confidently read grade level texts sitting right next to students who still struggle to decode basic words.
Supporting those students isn’t always easy.
Teachers often face three major challenges when providing reading intervention: limited time, a lack of confidence around teaching foundational reading skills, and difficulty finding resources that feel appropriate for older students.
Those challenges became a major focus when developing the Reading Intervention Kit.
We wanted teachers to have an intervention resource that didn’t require hours of additional planning or a completely separate curriculum. We also wanted the lessons to provide explicit, systematic instruction while still feeling age appropriate for upper elementary students.
Effective Reading Intervention in Just 15 Minutes a Day
One of our biggest goals was to make intervention realistic for an actual classroom schedule.
The lessons and routines in the Reading Intervention Kit were intentionally designed to be completed in about 15 minutes a day, giving teachers a clear structure for providing targeted decoding and phonics intervention without sacrificing the rest of their literacy block.
In the episode, Emily also shares more about the research that guided the development of the Reading Intervention Kit, our beta testing process, and the thoughtful decisions we made to ensure the routines are both teacher friendly and effective. When it comes to reading intervention for upper elementary, we knew it wasn’t enough to simply create more activities. We wanted every lesson and routine to be grounded in research and designed around how struggling readers actually learn.
Research helped us determine which foundational skills to prioritize, how to sequence instruction, and how much explicit teaching, practice, and review students need. But we also knew that effective reading intervention for upper elementary has to work within the realities of a busy third, fourth, or fifth grade classroom. That’s why beta testing was such an important part of the development process.
Testing the lessons with real teachers and students helped us refine the pacing, routines, directions, and activities. We wanted teachers to be able to pick up a lesson and confidently provide targeted instruction without spending hours planning or figuring out what to teach next.
Ultimately, our goal was to bridge the gap between reading research and classroom reality. The result is reading intervention for upper elementary that is systematic and purposeful while still being practical, engaging, and manageable for teachers and their students.

We know that reading intervention for upper elementary can feel intimidating, especially when teachers are asked to provide phonics and phonemic awareness instruction without always having the training, resources, or time they need. That’s exactly why we created the Reading Intervention Kit.
And the feedback from teachers using these lessons with their students has reinforced just how important this support can be.
Zina shared how the lessons helped build her confidence with reading intervention for upper elementary:
“I appreciate you creating these lessons. It’s incredibly intimidating teaching phonics as an upper elementary teacher, and this made me so comfortable!”
Tara also shared that the lessons helped her meet her students’ needs while strengthening her own understanding:
“I was able to address the needs of my students but also deepen my understanding of the English language.”
