The first day of school can come with a lot of pressure. There are lesson plans to finalize, supplies to organize, names to learn, procedures to teach, activities to prep, and about a hundred little details running through your mind.
And somewhere along the way, it can start to feel like your first day needs to be perfect.
You need the perfect welcome activity. The perfect classroom setup. The perfect schedule. The perfect lesson plans. And, of course, you need to fit everything you planned into the school day.
But here’s the good news: A successful first day of school doesn’t require perfection.
In fact, trying to make the day perfect can sometimes distract you from the things that matter most.
In this episode, Meghan, Stellar Teacher team member and fifth-grade teacher, is joining us to talk about how to plan a first day of school that feels purposeful, manageable, and positive—for both you and your students. Instead of trying to squeeze dozens of activities and procedures into one day, Meghan encourages teachers to focus on two main priorities: relationships and routines.
When students leave your classroom at the end of the first day, they probably won’t remember every activity you completed. But they will remember how they felt.
Did they feel welcomed?
Did they feel like their teacher was excited to see them?
Did they start to understand how their new classroom works?
Those are much better measures of first-day success than whether you made it through every item on your lesson plan.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
- Why relationships and routines should be your biggest first-day priorities
- Simple ways to start building relationships with students
- Which classroom routines and procedures to prioritize
- How planning transitions can make your day run more smoothly
- Common first-day pitfalls that create unnecessary stress
- Tips for ending the day on a positive, organized note
Whether you’re looking for new teacher tips or you’re an experienced teacher preparing for another back-to-school season, this episode will help you simplify your first-day plans and focus on what truly matters.
Because your first day of school doesn’t need to be perfect. Your students simply need to leave knowing they’re safe, supported, and wanted in your classroom.
