This episode is going to help you build a research-backed framework to support comprehension! If you teach upper elementary reading, you’ve probably wondered:
How do I actually improve my students’ reading comprehension?
For years, comprehension instruction often looked like teaching one strategy at a time—visualizing, predicting, finding the main idea, and so on. While strong readers do use these skills, reading comprehension itself is not just one strategy. Teacher need a research-backed framework.
Reading comprehension is the result of multiple things working together. Students are more likely to understand a text when they can:
- Connect to background knowledge
- Understand vocabulary
- Process sentence structure
- Think critically about ideas in the text
Instead of asking: “What comprehension strategy should I teach today?”
A better question is: “What conditions can I create so my students are more likely to understand the text?”
That shift can completely change how we approach literacy instruction. That is why we make it a priority to provide tools and resources that support a research-backed framework to improve comprehension.
In this episode of The Stellar Teacher Podcast, we’re kicking off a brand-new series all about building an effective upper elementary literacy block. Today’s focus? Reading comprehension.
We’re breaking down:
- What reading comprehension actually is
- Why comprehension should be woven throughout your literacy block
- The key components that help students truly understand text
- A simple research-backed framework you can use with any text
One of the biggest misconceptions about comprehension instruction is the idea that comprehension can be taught through one strategy at a time. While strategies like visualizing and predicting can support readers, comprehension itself is actually the result of multiple things working together. You don’t need more strategies, you need a research-backed framework!
