Differentiation vs intervention —what’s the difference, and how do you know which one your struggling readers actually need?
These two terms are used all the time in education, and sometimes they’re even used interchangeably. But differentiation and intervention serve two very different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you move beyond simply giving a struggling reader more support and start giving them the right type of support.
Maybe you’ve shortened an assignment, provided a graphic organizer, changed the text, pulled a student into a small group, or given them additional practice. These can all be helpful supports—but are they actually addressing the reason the student is struggling?

What Is Differentiation?
Differentiation is about adjusting instruction to help students access grade level learning. All students are working toward the same learning goal or standard, but some students may need a different pathway or additional support to get there.
For example, you might provide a student with sentence stems during a written response, preteach important vocabulary before reading, chunk a longer text into smaller sections, provide additional modeling, or use a graphic organizer to help students organize their thinking.
These are all ways to remove barriers while still helping students engage with grade level content.
And differentiation isn’t just for struggling students. It is an important part of strong Tier 1 instruction because students naturally enter our classrooms with different strengths, experiences, and needs.
What Is Intervention?
Intervention has a different purpose. While differentiation helps students access what you’re currently teaching, intervention targets an underlying skill gap that may be preventing a student from making progress.
For example, imagine a fourth grade student is struggling to comprehend a grade level passage. Differentiation might help that student access the passage through vocabulary support, chunking, or teacher modeling.
But what if the student’s actual challenge is decoding?
Providing a graphic organizer isn’t going to close that decoding gap.
That student may need targeted intervention focused specifically on the foundational reading skills they haven’t yet mastered.
This is why understanding differentiation vs intervention matters so much. If we only provide accommodations that help students complete today’s grade level task, we may never address the underlying skills that are making reading difficult in the first place.
